Friday Five 2003 07 04
Friday Five for today:
1. What were your favorite childhood stories?
- Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak. Winner of the 1964 Caldicott Award.
- Horton Hatches the Egg, by Dr Seuss. Need I say more?
- Gerald McBoing Boing, by Dr. Seuss. My mother used to call me Gerald McBoing Boing... I guess I'm still prone to making sound effects... :)
- Mr Pine's Mixed Up Signs, by Leonard P. Kessler. Sign maker loses glasses, causing mayhem all over town. A classic.
What books from your childhood would you like to share with [your] children?
Have you re-read any of those childhood stories and been surprised by anything?
- I have reread all but Mr. Pine's Mixed Up Signs. I want to find it.
How old were you when you first learned to read?
- I don't actually remember not being able to read. I think I read a bit before Grade 1, but I'm not sure.
Do you remember the first 'grown-up' book you read? How old were you?
- I read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights when I was about 10.
- Lord of the Rings trilogy about the same time.
- Not sure what order I read them in. Why did I read the Bronte sisters' work? Because I found old large format copies from the 30's with beautiful illustrations in them. Don't know where they went, unfortunately. Lost in a move (we moved often) no doubt.

I read Jane Eyre as my first "grown-up" book when I was 9 or 10, too!
